This is the fundamental difference between Thunder and Hyperspeed. The average Shopify store runs 15-25 third-party app scripts — review widgets, email popups, analytics trackers, chat widgets — and these are responsible for the majority of speed issues on most stores.

Thunder focuses on identifying and optimizing these third-party scripts. It scans every installed app, measures each script's impact on page load time, and gives you a detailed report showing which apps are the worst offenders. It then defers and optimizes those scripts without modifying your theme. This approach directly addresses the most common cause of slow Shopify stores.

Hyperspeed takes a different approach — it optimizes at the theme level. It extracts critical CSS, defers non-critical stylesheets, preloads fonts, compresses images, and applies aggressive resource loading optimizations directly in your theme code. This can deliver significant speed improvements, especially for stores with heavy, poorly optimized themes.

Setup Complexity

Thunder installs in under 30 seconds and starts working immediately. It doesn't modify your theme files — all optimizations happen at the script-loading level. You can see results within minutes of installation.

Hyperspeed requires more setup. Because it modifies theme files and applies aggressive optimizations, you may need to test thoroughly, especially if you have a custom or heavily modified theme. Some optimizations (like critical CSS extraction) can break styling if not configured correctly. Plan for some back-and-forth testing during initial setup.

Core Web Vitals Monitoring

Thunder includes built-in Core Web Vitals monitoring (LCP, INP, CLS) directly in your Shopify dashboard.
