1. Start with business trust signals
Google needs to see the same business everywhere: your Shopify footer, Contact page, Merchant Center account, legal registration, payment profile, social profiles, and marketplace history if you mention it. Do not hide the phone number, address, support email, or legal entity behind vague copy.
If the store is young, has a large catalog, or sources products from wholesale marketplaces, make the operation look accountable. Add a real About page, precise shipping/returns pages, and clear support expectations.
2. Audit claims Google may interpret literally
Words like “authorized retailer,” “official,” “certified,” “direct from manufacturer,” and “guaranteed authentic” can help conversion, but they also create proof requirements. If those claims are true, link to a brand authorization page or show the documentation path clearly. If they are not easy to prove, soften the claim until the account is approved.
3. Compare Merchant Center against live Shopify product pages
This is the part merchants skip because the store looks fine in the browser. Pick 10 products across different brands, prices, variants, and inventory states. For each one, compare:
- price and currency
- availability and inventory status
- GTIN, brand, MPN, and product condition
- shipping price, delivery timing, and return window
- canonical URL and live landing page content
If Shopify says one thing and Merchant Center says another, fix that before requesting review. This overlaps with the same diagnostic logic in our Shopify products missing from Google Merchant Center checklist.
4. Make policy pages specific, not templated
Template policies are better than nothing, but misrepresentation reviews need specifics. Shipping should say where you ship, expected delivery windows, who pays duties, and what happens with unavailable products. Returns should say the exact window, condition requirements, refund timing, and contact path.
Link these pages in the footer and from product/cart context where relevant. Google should not have to hunt for basic buying terms.
5. Keep product pages crawlable and stable
Speed is not the usual root cause of a GMC suspension, but a slow product page can make review and crawl consistency worse. Heavy apps, delayed variant scripts, and unstable inventory displays can make Google see different information than a shopper sees.
Run the affected product URLs through Thunder’s speed test, then use our Shopify speed optimization guide and Core Web Vitals guide to fix the obvious issues before scaling ad traffic.
6. Submit a concise evidence pack
Do not resubmit with “we fixed everything.” That gives the reviewer nothing to verify. Use a short note with URLs and screenshots:
- business name, address, phone, and support email locations
- shipping, returns, privacy, and terms URLs
- sample products with matching feed/page proof
- removed or verified retailer/brand claims
- date changes were published and crawlable
Where Thunder fits
Thunder Page Speed and SEO will not replace the trust and feed work above. It helps with the technical layer: faster product pages, cleaner loading, and fewer storefront performance issues while Google crawls and reviews the site. If speed is part of the problem, install Thunder from the Shopify App Store or start with the free speed test.
FAQ
Why did Google suspend my Shopify store for misrepresentation?
For Shopify stores, misrepresentation usually comes from trust or consistency gaps: business details that are hard to verify, unclear policies, unsupported retailer claims, or product feed data that does not match the live product page.
Can a product feed mismatch trigger Merchant Center misrepresentation?
Yes. Price, currency, availability, shipping, returns, brand, GTIN, or condition mismatches between Merchant Center and the live Shopify page can be treated as a misrepresentation problem, not just a feed warning.
Should Shopify stores remove authorized retailer claims?
If the claim cannot be easily proven on the site with brand or distributor authorization, soften it or remove it before requesting review. Google needs verifiable proof, not just accurate intent.
Does Shopify page speed fix a GMC suspension?
Speed alone usually will not fix a misrepresentation suspension, but slow or unstable pages make crawling and review harder. Fix trust, policy, and feed issues first, then keep product pages fast and crawlable.
